Diamond in the Back

We've been on a gallivant to the Zoo today. Marwell to be precise. On the first day of our stay~cation. Very neat day out. Remembered how much I adore those uber fizzy cola bottles with the sour taste that hurts your tongue, seen some of our BFFs who we haven't seen in 4 (!?) years and had an amazingly gorgeous and contented (& I use that word with its proper meaning) baby for company too.

Many of the star animals like the big cats seemed rather sedated by the heat this afternoon, as were E & O who both took turns at a power nap in the buggy, but S out energised the rest of us by quiet some way.

 Creating a vortex

 New play stuff

It has been a while since we visited Marwell and there are several new play areas which have been added recently.

Whilst we were in the zoo someone kindly bashed into our car in the car park leaving no contact details. Thanks for that. Reminded ourselves that people are more important than things and didn't let it spoil the day.

On the way home we had a snack of drive through McDonalds! A very rare treat in our family. Well, we are on holiday! Organised Mummy had proper, healthy supper all ready and waiting at home but I could sense hunger in the ranks! Marwell is a big walk of a day.

Continued my crash course in Second World war and our local area last night, read about the Sussex Resistance, a network of tunnels under our village and skimmed the autobiography (A School Boy's War in Sussex) of an evacuee send to Pulborough from South London and the story of how cruel the resident village school children were to the new arrivals. Also flipped through S's books and the recurring theme seemed to be how many evacuees wet the bed and many were locked in the cupboard for doing so. Seriously sad stuff.

Great to see old friends, a rare treat for TDO and I.

Sorry about your car. The rest seems very nice.

Ooh we have been to Marwell, few years back now whilst visiting mother in law in Hampshire. Fab zoo!

Yes Frank, probably one of those fixing jobs that will cost the same as our insurance policy excess. Still, when you drive a large VW you can be pretty confident the other car suffered too. Very badly designed car park, I can within a whisker of inflicting the same injury to the car next to us as we left.

We were comparing Marwell to Longleat, Drusillas and Howletts Angela and felt it wasn't as good as it has been on previous visits. Although there is the new Australia walk area Longleat and Drusillas give you more "up close" opportunities which the trio like. There were very few monkeys yesterday, only 3 giffares whereas there were 10 or more last time and a real lack if information signs on several of the cages (well, we are home educators!) It was so brilliant to see our friends though that none of it really mattered and we found 2 more national trust properties closer to us than we thought!!
