As is often the way the pendulum swung back last night leaving the Daddy One (TDO) & I with this rare commodity known as an evening. We squandered it watching a Bruce Wills' film called Red.
For 5 or so years now, around this time of year, several local friends have shared gorgeous photos of their delightful children in Slindon's bluebell woods. Every year, for one reason or another, we seem to miss their colourful show and I was determined 2012 would be a hit! So we set off, with a vague idea of the location but turned into the wrong National Trust area and came face to face with the green John Deere towing the Gaston Farm lambing tourists on a narrow, unmade, country lane. My map reading skills don't win me friends but undeterred I asked for directions. I know! Asked!! and we found the gorgeous woods. My trio flatly refused to do a group shot though. Thank goodness they don't require an annual school photo. I notice that next Saturday the 21st there is Den Building at Slindon Woods as part of the National Trust things to do before you are 11 3/4 advertising campaign.
After a stroll through the carpet of blue we headed to Bignor Roman Villa for their gladiator day and to renew our annual friends membership. Despite sorting out all his lego and playmobil Romans, Et wouldn't go and watch the historical reenactment display so he & I stayed inside pretending we were Lupus from Roman Mysteries by writing on a wax tablet and playing with the toy Roman soldiers whilst S, O & TDO went and watched the show:
Gladiator day is on again tomorrow at Bignor if you fancy it.
We took a picnic but it didn't turn out to be the lazy afternoon I imagined as it was freezing! So after eating lunch we returned home where S and I have just made Nigella's apple cake.
In Other News
We had the first asparagus of the year from our garden yesterday.
S is reading the Secret Garden. The strewing plan of filling her shelves with books she hadn't read rather than a place to store old reads is working really well atm. This morning she was asking about snake anatomy and this afternoon has been asking us what we think will be the most important inventions of the next twenty years.
E mixes up peasants and pheasants and today, when we were driving down Bury Hill he said "Look at those stupid peasants in the road."
Today's title track is by the fabulous D C Lee and is the song I mentioned a few days back - connections as with O's upcoming third anniversary we were looking at photos of him newborn and S is wearing a T- Shirt that says "I Love to Play" Professional players :)

Woo! That asparagus looks tasty Katie! Yum!
Does that take two years to be ready?
I haven't read Secret Garden, but the idea has been in my head since I was a kid.
We sometimes do bookpiles, but not at the moment. I do keep books circulating on/off the shelves though.
It really is yummy!! Yes two years before you can harvest it. We have lived in this house 8 years now and I think the asparagus is about 6 years old.
S has seen the film and the tacky BBC series from a few decades ago!
I try and circulate books to - I use new to mean new to us rather than brand new!!
Yep, long two year wait (provided you've planted year old crowns else add another year on again) and even then you're only supposed to harvest a few in that year. Plus you need to prep the ground before you plant more than you might otherwise as can't easily remove weeds once the crowns are established. But you forgive all this when you taste that first spear....
Phew, it's a bit of a long wait for veg, for me. We usually don't stay in one place for more than a couple of years.
They sure look good though. :)
