~Want You in My Soul~ (iii)

Alongside recording our home ed gallivants and reads you might have noticed that I have been, slowly, over the last 11 months of blogging, building a collection of anecdotes mostly about people who have followed what might be called non traditional career paths. From the retired anesthetist, Roger Edwards, who sculpted the much loved worm sandwich at Worthing Museum to the way in which we learnt at the Surgeon's Museum that for many years women surgeons were not permitted forcing them to work in an unofficial capacity with mostly on the job learning (imagine!)

This process of looking out for anecdotes has had two main functions. Firstly it has helped me to see that very few famous people have followed a traditional path to their role and secondly amongst people we know (not all of whom are famous) and see regularly that it is now normal for there have been several career changes, retraining. Sitting exams your 40s now seems fairly normal for example and that the exception is often the rule. Secondly it has also given me much confidence is our path of life learning is heading us to be exceptional. Exceptional is what stands you out it's dual meaning of both proving the rule and being the best is why, I guess, it appeals to an outsider the boxer like me.
