I Like this Poem
It must have been in about 1981, 30 years ago, that my Mum paid £1.40 for this book, "I Like This Poem" for me from the bookshop in Camberley High Street. I remember, she ordered it in especially. Books were expensive in the 1980s. The net book pricing agreement was still in force. This small book would have cost about £8 in today's money. It was well loved by me and has been well loved by my daughter. So much so that it has fallen apart and so it has been living in pieces in an A5 envelope for the past two years. I have purchased several other poetry books for her but this in the one she keeps coming back to.
Sea Breeze, When Daddy Fell into The Pond, Double Double Toil and Trouble, Night Mail, It is a treasure trove of classics.
So, I treated us to a brand new copy and we have been enjoying it all over again today. There is something a little odd though about a shiny new copy of a book whose contents you recall from three decades ago. It cost £4.00 by the way which when you think that average earnings were about £8,000 per annum then to the £25,000 or so they are now you see that, relatively, books really were very expensive back then.
Thanks Mum. For everything and more x
